House in Greece in "V" Shape

By Michael Madsen in General 22nd May, 2023 Video Duration: 00:04:32
This house is located on the south coast of the island of Crete, Greece. The house has a "V" shape with a rounded tip and is articulated by two concrete beams that follow the topography of the hill and define the contour of the house.

The ring shape of the house protects an internal garden planted with varieties of citrus trees and edible plants, providing shaded and protected areas as well as panoramic views of the entire horizon and natural ventilation for all inhabited spaces.

The material used in the construction of the house was chosen to blend with the surrounding landscape, with external walls built in quarry stone and a concrete strip that limits the external walls to the top.

The house was designed to form a temperate microclimate, an oasis within an intensely beautiful but physically demanding environment. In addition, the construction of the house was an effort to preserve the landscape, as the topography had been severely marked by random and informal road excavation.

The excavation material extracted during the construction of the house was used to recover the original morphology of the land, and a thorough survey of the native flora was carried out to understand the predominant biotopes on the different slopes of the land. During the spring, before construction, seeds were collected on site and cultivated in a greenhouse to produce more seeds. These were then sown on the scars of the roads for flora regeneration.
