A Minimalistic Scandinavian Design: Behind the Design of the Heartwood Haus

By Michael Madsen in General 24th Jun, 2023 Video Duration: 00:04:26
Designed for current needs and in anticipation of the future, Heartwood Haus is a forever home that Plain View Design + Build will forever be proud to hang its shingle on.
Aptly named after a centuries old Cottonwood tree on the property, the Heartwood Haus plays homage to the lot’s characteristics and takes advantage of a young family’s design ambitions. This project serves as the embodiment of what Plain View Design + Build aspires to create, which is meaningful design, intentionally built. The success of this home starts with the clients who were forthcoming about their needs
Heartwood Haus was designed for a growing family who values together time, but also appreciates privacy. The main floor was configured to serve the home’s common ground complete with an expansive great room, open concept kitchen, cleverly hidden butler’s pantry and easily accessible outdoor living space.
Intimately familiar with North Dakota’s climate that keeps residents indoors during cold winter months, it was important to let the outdoors in. Sun permeates the space through abundant windows that also frame the enviable views along the Missouri riverfront. Solar studies provide science behind the decision to site the home and situate the windows. Energy conservation and efficiencies add a measurable return on investment.
The Heartwood Haus is high-function, but it’s also highly appealing. The family’s personal affinity for vintage modern with a dash of Danish led to the use of natural materials, timeless tilework, simple styling and even a sunken conversation pit. Imagination is encouraged through an under-the-stairs play space and the loft with a kid-friendly craft area.
Behind the scenes, a staggered stud wall serves to dampen sounds from the movie room. Time was spent sourcing unique building materials that met the family’s design requests and contributed to efficiencies and conservation. Unfamiliar elements were personally installed by Plain View Design + Build to test durability and vet usefulness.

Black is one of the most versatile colors in design… but the magic happens in what you pair it with. The most elevated spaces use black to create contrast, depth, and balance rather than letting it dominate the room. When paired thoughtfully, black feels
