5th Ave Opulence: Iconic, Gilded Age Manhattan Mansion Lists for $80M

Realtor.com

New York City’s Gilded Age has always embodied a certain romance—and as of last month, one lucky (and very wealthy) buyer will have the chance to snag a rare slice of this American era.

This one-of-a-kind, limestone and brick mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side is priced at $80 million and is truly the stuff of real estate portfolio dreams.

The local landmark is uniquely situated and stands as “one of the last remnants of the luxurious mansions along Fifth Avenue, facing Central Park, that remain in private hands,” the listing from Compass states.

Those familiar with the city might have noticed that this iconic, salmon-pink mansion sits directly across from the main entrance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Storied estate

Tobacco entrepreneur Benjamin N. Duke purchased this residence in 1901, and it stayed in the family until 2006, when it was sold for $40 million to real estate investor Tamir Sapir.

Mexican telecom magnate Carlos Slim picked up the property in 2010 for $44 million. He listed it in 2015 for $80 million and eventually took it off the market.

Built in 1901 in a Renaissance palazzo and beaux-arts style, the light-filled residence is 20,000 square feet of pure luxury. There are eight bedrooms and 10 bathrooms.

The grand staircase winds its way through all five levels, and the large windows on each landing offer prime views of Fifth Avenue and Central Park. The building boasts 27 feet of Fifth Avenue frontage.

Upper levels include skylit rooms and a rooftop terrace with skyline views.

Marble floors and ornate moldings will remind buyers that they aren’t just living in a home—they’re inhabiting a piece of history.

And while the current building is set up as a private residence, it could easily be converted into a gallery, store, or museum.
