Midcentury Modern Home for sale

A midcentury modern house in Prairie Village, KS, is drawing attention not just for its unique design, but also for its eye-popping list price of $975,000.

The minimalist home is priced well above the median home price of $375,000 for Prairie Village, and it has just one bedroom and two bathrooms. But it is big on style, designed by famed architect Bruce Goff and built in 1967.

“The house is known as the Searing House (named after its owners), and this is the first time it has been on the market since it was built,” says listing agent Katherine Lee, of Bash & Co. Sotheby’s International Realty.

“Bruce Goff designed three homes in Kansas City, and this is one of them. The house is located in Prairie Village, which, back when Kansas City was being developed, was notorious for its Cape Cod–style homes, so this was very unique,” Lee explains.

‘Piece of art’

Room dividers made of wood separate the living areas in the 1,515-square-foot home. The space is anchored by a triangular fireplace located in the middle of the room.

“The design is super unique in that it is basically one room with two bathrooms with all-wood dividing walls that fold,” Lee says. “It’s really a piece of art the way it is laid out.”

The octagonal-shaped home is filled with windows and sliding doors, which flood the space with natural light. There’s even a skylight above the fireplace.

Original details include the wood-cladded walls and ceilings, banana-yellow kitchen, and wall-to-wall teal carpeting.

Construction mayhem

The original intent was to build a house that was inspired by traditional Japanese minimalism and open communal living.

After purchasing the lot, the owners faced local resistance when it came time to build.

Construction on the home was halted when a city developer had the crew arrested for working on what he regarded as an illegal build.

A union strike ensued, which then halted construction of the developer’s new shopping mall. The developer eventually conceded, and the home was completed.

“The owners raised a family here and spent years preserving and maintaining it. It is pretty much the same as when it was constructed, but the bathrooms have been modernized,” Lee says.

“The entire footprint of the house is also below, so the downstairs space could be finished,” she adds. “It’s almost the exact same footprint of the house. They have a workshop and gardening room down there, but it could be transformed into an entertainment room for the kids or even a home office.”
