Christina Hall Admits She Has ‘Never Seen a Home Like This’—Check It Out!

Christina Hall holds her tongue when she spies some unusual design choices.

HGTV

California coastal designer Christina Hall has a new pair of shoes to fill (or boots, to be specific) now that she’s bought a house in Nashville, TN. Hall is busy creating a country-chic lifestyle for herself and her clients, on her spinoff series “Christina in the Country.”

In the episode, “Tennessee Transplants,” she helps fellow Nashville newcomers Kevin and Katie bring their edgy-yet-elegant style to a terrible Tuscan-style property on the outskirts of Franklin, TN.

What starts out as an unlimited budget to renovate the unusual home becomes very limited, indeed—but you’d never know it from the way Hall and this resourceful couple work together.

They deliver plenty of tips on how anyone can glam up a living space without breaking the bank. Take a look to see what Christina and crew can teach you this week.

Faux’s gotta go

Hall is shocked as she tours Kevin and Katie’s Tuscan-style home, which doesn’t mesh in the slightest with the local country vibe.

“They actually painted a bannister rail on the back of a peninsula?” Hall asks in horror as she walks into the kitchen. “What in the world?”

She sees that the previous owners also painted a faux-marble checkerboard onto a wood floor.

“Even their refrigerator is faux-painted?” Hall muses. “This is fascinating! I’ve seen hundreds of homes, and I have never seen a home like this.”

Everything gets ripped up—from the kitchen to the floors, prompting Kevin to declare, “Faux no mo.'”

Thank heavens!

A chevron pattern is easy to install if it’s LVP

Kevin loves a good chevron pattern for his floors but is worried about the price and installation.

Hall assures the couple that luxury vinyl planks (LVP) come already printed in a chevron pattern, so installation is a cinch. Plus, the materials cost only $3.77 per square foot. Amazing!

They look so good and simple to install, Kevin gets an idea…

Sweat equity pays off

Kevin and Katie do the math and decide they don’t currently have the funds to do both upstairs and downstairs, so they settle on just a downstairs reno.

Since they’ve flipped houses before, Kevin decides to do as much of the work as possible to save on labor.

Hall is blown away when she sees he’s painted the old fireplace mantle matte black, pulled out all the faux-painted floors, and laid the wood-look chevron floors himself.

Enlarge windows to enjoy a great view

Katie wants a smaller window in the kitchen, with floating shelves on each side that she can fill with plants and accessories. But Kevin wants one huge window, with a grand view of the golf course, and no floating shelves.

“Do you not see the plants outside?” he asks Katie. “There will be a gigantic window showing all sorts of plants.”

Hall steps in to referee.

“Normally, I would always say 100% floating shelves,” she admits. “I love them, I always put them in my own houses. However … I do love a golf course. And I think you guys bought this house for that view, right? So, I feel like in this case, the bigger the window, probably the better.”

So the larger window wins out.

Go crazy in the powder room

Hall lets Kevin and Katie know that the powder room is the place to go all out with their unique style.

“I love a super-unique powder bath, because I think it’s like the one place that you don’t have to see a lot; and it’s just like the thing that guests always use,” Hall explains. “If you incorporate some black in there, with either like a black wainscoting or shiplap on the bottom…”

She also pulls in some interesting floor tiles and dramatic wallpaper to really make the bathroom pop.

Does Christina Hall’s latest makeover deliver?

Kevin and Katie are amazed at how well Hall’s designs reflect their eclectic style.

“This just really is the space to entertain, and I just can’t wait to have family and friends over and really be able to enjoy it,” says Katie. “Through this whole process, it’s been so much fun; and it was so exciting to work with you, and thank you for being a mediator between us!”

Hall is pleased, too.

“This project is one of the most unique projects I’ve ever done, and this one was truly teamwork,” she says. “Kevin did an amazing job doing so much of the work himself. I love this project.”

Any bets on whether Hall will return to renovate the couple’s upstairs primary suite later in the season?
