Live the Luxe Life for Less: 5 Mansions for Under A Million Bucks

Realtor.com

What constitutes a mansion, anyway? Is it square footage? Price? Luxury facilities? All three put together in some sort of swanky combo?

For our purposes, size matters. We found five luxury homes, all measuring more than 7,000 square feet. And prices matter, too—budget prices. Can you believe all these giant, fancy pads cost less than $1 million?

We found these deluxe domiciles in places like Plattsburgh NY, Montrose CO, and Canfield OH.

Even if you’re not considering moving in, it’s fun to see the types of big houses you can still get for under a million bucks.

Check out these homes that could help you live out your champagne dreams at domestic beer prices.

26202 Ridgefield Park Ln, Cypress, TX

Price: $850,000

Brick house: Luxe pool with spa and waterfall? Check. Soaring ceilings? Check. Home theater? Check. Kitchen with an island and a peninsula? Check. Massive main suite? You bet.

Hard to believe this 7,877-square-foot, seven-bedroom, 6.5-bath manse is within easy commuting distance from Houston—and that it checks all those luxury boxes.

Built in 2006, the interior is full of the vivid colors, heavy drapes, and curly wrought-iron that was all the rage back then. But at this price, you might have plenty of money leftover to redecorate.

Mansion amongst the mountains: You’ll have plenty of room to spread out in this 7,633-square-foot mansion, on a 2-acre precipice, with a heavenly view of the San Juan Mountain range and the valley below.

Step into that two-story entry, featuring grand marble; a dazzling chandelier; and a sweeping, double staircase. The spread also includes five bedrooms and 4.5 baths.

But there are still more more fantastic features—a four-story, enclosed atrium with a fountain; a parlor with a grand piano platform; and a two-story office with an upper level that serves as a well-appointed library.

35 Upchurch Rd, McDonough, GA

Price: $905,000

Country estate: This 7,793-square-foot, Atlanta-area compound is actually discounted $55,000 from its original list price in November 2022.

In addition to its five bedrooms and five baths, the property boasts a chef’s kitchen, living room with fireplace, balcony, and sunroom. But perhaps the biggest highlight is the 3,000-square-foot basement, outfitted with a game room, crafts room, built-in bar, and wine cellar.

On the nearly two-acre lot is a resortlike saltwater pool, flanked by a fresh-air kitchen, fire pit, and grassy lawn. The property is meticulously landscaped and includes a chainlink and partially invisible fence for four-legged friends.

77 Brinkerhoff St, Plattsburgh, NY

Price: $895,000

Stately manor: If only it had a Bat Cave in the basement, this 14-bedroom, 10-bath historical mansion could stand in for Batman’s Wayne Manor. The best part is, you don’t need to be a billionaire or a superhero to buy it.

Original features abound in this 9,732-square-foot estate, built in 1878. There’s wood paneling and flooring, elaborately carved staircases, stained-glass windows, wood-panel doors with original hardware, cast-iron heaters, French and pocket doors, and built-in cabinets.

We’re thinking it might be just right for multifamily living, since it has two full kitchens, a kitchenette, two dining rooms, three living rooms, plus a basement that could be used for storage or developed into another living space. There’s also a 600-square-foot cottage on the one-acre property.

Guests will be impressed when they pull up to the home, via half-circle driveway, then dine on food prepared in the gourmet kitchen. This cook space boasts an 18-foot island, double ovens, and a Sub-Zero refrigerator.

Then, it’s off for a cocktail in the massive great room—or a drink at the wet bar. Or take a stroll around the nearly 3-acre wooded grounds, with traditional English gardens and a children’s play area. Fun for the whole family!
