On the latest “Good Bones,” Mina Starsiak Hawk is back in the Old Southside neighborhood of Indianapolis—and this time, she’s showing off a cozy new design style that her team is dubbing “cabin chic.”

In the episode “Twinning Is Winning,” Starsiak Hawk sets out to build another house from scratch and decides to use the same floor plan she used for the home she remodeled right down the street. It has two stories, four bedrooms, and three baths in 1,800 square feet of space.

But in order to make the two houses “fraternal” rather than “identical” twins, she and her crew settle on a warm, cabin chic look.

As with the other property, she paid $40,000 for the lot, plans to spend $200,000 in construction, and hopes to sell it in the very high $300,000s.

If you’d like to get a bit of that cozy warmth in your own home, you might try some of the ideas below.

Go dark to warm up the exterior

“The first one was a lighter color palette, sort of that stark black and white vibe, so I think we cozy it up on this one, because we have a similar outside shape,” says Starsiak Hawk. “We go dark.”

What does that mean? “Like a dark milk chocolate” on the exterior, she explains, with a lighter trim and a moody blue door.

“Rich brown, for even more of that cabin vibe,” says Starsiak Hawk, referring to the dark shake shingles and board and batten siding.

“This will be like a moody, cozy cabin vibe on the exterior with all the dark wood, but still very chic on the inside,” says designer MJ.

Go greige with natural wood to warm up the interior

“A calming greige paint is going up all over the walls and ceiling for an extra cozy feel,” says Starsiak Hawk.

But she doesn’t stop there.

“We’ll bring in cabin charm by using lots of warm wood and furniture, like the bathroom cabinets,” she adds.

She’ll also use a lot of natural wood tones in the art and other small decor accents.

Luxury vinyl flooring can look just like wood

Starsiak Hawk and MJ select luxury vinyl flooring, which is much more affordable than real wood—yet it looks just like it.

“They have a sort of knotty look to them,” says MJ. “So they’re very cabin chic.”

“The knotty wood floors set the tone the moment you walk in,” adds Starsiak Hawk.

They run that LVF flooring throughout the house—including the bathrooms and the kitchen.

“Gold reads too feminine,” says Starsiak Hawk.

She opts for a blackish, simple industrial-looking handle, which will go on the cabinets and drawers in the open kitchen, and on the built-in cabinetry upstairs and in the bathrooms.

Create a stair rail that doubles as an accent wall

Starsiak Hawk wants to use the same unique stair rail/wall accent that they used in the twin house. But that was made of metal. Since this house will have a cabin vibe, this time she’ll use wood.

“The design is very simple,” says Starsiak Hawk. “It’s vertical boards, and they are going to come directly down and hit the floor.”

“This is not white oak. This is ash, which is great,” she adds. “You get the look for a lot less money. I’m super happy with that.”

A wax finish gives it the appropriate cozy yet sophisticated look.

Does Mina Starsiak Hawk end up selling this house?

Starsiak Hawk has interest from Hannah, a young professional, before the house is even completed. She keeps her potential buyer in mind as she completes the house.

Starsiak Hawk has a lot on the line—she bought the lot for $40,000, and invested $200,000 to build anew. Now she’s listed it at $305,000. Will Hannah think it’s worth it?

“I couldn’t think of anything more I’d want in my first house,” Hannah says with a huge smile on her face. “It’s everything I could have wanted, and I have never been more confident in a decision than I am about this house.”

She pays the full list price, and the Starsiak Hawk team makes a whopping $65,000. Clearly, cabin chic is a big hit!
