Right Below the Hollywood Sign, a Midcentury Modern Gets a Marvelous Makeover

A newly restored midcentury modern gem in Los Angeles has leapt onto the market for $1,649,000. Built in 1958, the home has had only three owners. Designed by architect Robert Malinoff while he was still a student at USC School of Architecture, it was built as his personal residence.
“It’s a really neat house,” says listing agent Nate Cole. Set in lush Beachwood Canyon, just below the Hollywood sign, the home was designed with its surroundings in mind. There are walls of glass and easy access to the outdoors. The construction uses simple materials such as brick, glass, wood, and concrete.
The developer HabHouse purchased the home in February 2020 and gave it a sensitive and quick renovation, including period details.

With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, the 2,377-square-foot interior includes an open living and dining room. An updated galley kitchen features stainless-steel appliances, a new countertop, and original cabinetry.
The master bedroom opens to the outside, and the home’s large patio and yard offer space for dining and lounging.
Malinoff’s original design comes with a couple of interesting backstories. Cole learned the home had originally been one level, with the second story (and artful staircase) added later. With a limited budget, the architect also used reclaimed brick and concrete to save on expenses.
Past updates veered from the modern look, so the developer “took a restoration standpoint,” Cole says, and rebuilt era-appropriate touches. Improvements included adding a tankless water heater, replacing the second-floor carpeting with hardwood flooring, and updating the baths to look original.
As for the sunny yellow front door? Original photos shared by the architect’s family show a “pretty colorful house,” Cole notes, so the bright hue of the entry brings to mind its 1950s appearance.
The home’s locale is also a standout. The natural setting is “idyllic” and about “as close as you can get” to the Hollywood sign, Cole notes. And Hollywood proper is just a short drive down the hill.
