A 1934 hacienda-style estate in Los Angeles is seeking a new steward. The listing price is $10,350,000.

The property consists of a 4,796-square-foot main house and a 2,092-square-foot guesthouse, with six bedrooms and five baths total. The 6.7-acre lot is located in West Hills in the western San Fernando Valley region. It’s about 30 miles northwest of downtown L.A.

“It became very important in motion picture history,” says listing agent Mike Deasy, of Deasy Penner & Partners, about the estate. “That part of the [San Fernando Valley] was largely undeveloped, (used) as ranch land.”

In fact, it was formed from an original 270-acre Spanish land grant.

Hollywood history

Franz Lederer, a film and stage actor born in Prague who later rose to fame in Hollywood, bought the property in the 1920s and started working with designer John R. Litke. The estate was completed in 1934 and modeled after two California missions: Santa Ynez and San Luis Rey.

Lederer died in 2000 at the age of 100.

Known as the Franz Lederer Hacienda and Ranch, the property even comes with two cows. Some of the artwork will remain with the property, the listing notes.

The eye-catching estate made an appearance in the music video for OneRepublic’s “Didn’t.”

The hacienda style is anchored by a brick-paved courtyard with a fountain. The interiors feature a vaulted ceiling with heavy beams, arched windows, and 35 pairs of Spanish doors. White-washed brick walls and friezes throughout are delightful design throwbacks.

There are two en suite bedrooms in the main house, along with a library with a Gothic-style fireplace, and a dining terrace.

Guests or staff can make use of the detached three-bedroom, two-unit guesthouse.

Restored residence

Recent restoration work included retaining and preserving the exterior walls, which were built with local stone and historic tiles imported from Spain and Portugal, says Deasy.

In 2000, the entire estate was reinforced for earthquake safety.

Listed as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument 204, it earned the distinction for its architectural, cultural, and historical significance. It’s a thoroughly modern residence that’s still faithful to the spirit of Old California.

“This is not an ordinary house and it’s not as if there are a lot of hilltop ranches for sale” in the area, Deasy says. “It’s (also) a very reasonable price.”
